So I have been sharing ideas, how to’s and the reason’s why all week. But at the end of the day it is up to you as to how you present yourself online. It can be crazy, fun, serious, weird, strange and any other adjective you can think of, but don’t be fooled. you do have an online image and a personal brand. Even if you do not think you do.
The word “brand” is very simple to define. Whether it is a company or an individual or You. It is what you say about the company when you are discussing it with your friends, colleagues, or family, or on some social media site. Your personal brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room.
So what is your brand? If you are not actively creating one for yourself one is being created for you. The way you dress, the way you act, the way you present yourself -online and in person- is your brand. Isn’t it better to create one for yourself instead of allowing others to create one for you. Yes it could be good or it could be bad. If you are actively working on your brand you control your brand. Yes you can’t always control what people say about you or how you are perceived but you can actively work to develop your brand.
It is OK if you are not sure what type of brand you want to present, and it is different for each individual. There are image consultants that do this for a living. PR (public relations) has built their industry on presenting the right brand to the public. But in today’s world you need to have a personal brand online and in person. I personally don’t care what it is I just wish that everyone had an active role in their own personal brand.
SMS has given you many reasons and helpful tips this week, but at the end of the day you have to decide who you are. I spoke to a friend today and he has tried to create several different brands for himself online. He decided to follow his passion, which is helping people, and that is his brand.
I could end this week with another list of how to’s or tips or examples of what others have done but I am not going to do that. I am going to leave you with this thought.
“If a man does not keep pace with his companions. Perhaps it is because he hears the beat of a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears. However measured or faraway” Thoureau
My parents gave me this on a plaque when I was young and I have been stepping to my own music ever since. This is part of my personal brand. What is yours?
